Agricultural damage from ‘Vinta’ hits P1.3-B

MANILA, Philippines — Damage to agriculture from tropical storm ‘Vinta’ in Regions VIII, IX, X, XI and Caraga has reached P1,3,07,319,391.11, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

Most of the damage was to rice and corn fields in the affected regions, NDRRMC executive director Ricardo Jalad said.

Damage to infrastructure in Regions IX, X, and XI was placed at P242,695,110 while 6,850 houses — 3,641 totally and 3,209 partially — were reported damaged in Mimarop, Regions IX, X, XI and ARMM.

The storm, which struck just before Christmas, affected 168,081 families, or 794,613 persons, in 1,151 barangays. Of these, 17,318 families, or 84,766 persons, remain inside 92 evacuation centers.

Jalad said five persons were confirmed dead, 18 injured and 13 remain missing, although the NDRRMC is still validating reports of another 160 reported dead and 163 reported missing.
