MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE - 12:45 p.m., January 12, 2017) Vice President Leni Robredo did not attend the traditional Vin d‘Honneur at Malacanang because she was dropped from the Palace guest list, her spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

“Our office received an invitation to the Vin d‘honneur via e-mail last December 28,” Hernandez said.

However, on January 4, she said, “Malacanang called the Office to retract the invitation, stating that the guest list was limited.”

At the event, the first for President Rodrigo Duterte, he stressed the importance of friendship between nations and drew laughter from the diplomatic corps and other guests when he prefaced the traditional toast with "Kampai" and "bottoms up."

However, while everyone else sipped champagne, Duterte stuck to apple cider.

Asked why Robredo was dropped from the guest list, presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said it was "the prerogative" of Duterte and Malacanang "to invite those who they feel is needed to be there."
