MANILA, Philippines - A fire that reportedly started early Tuesday inside a house used as a drug and sex den in Navotos City left about 1,200 families homeless and at least 600 houses of informal settlers in ashes.
According to fire investigators, the fire at Market 3, NBBN in Navotas started at about 4 a.m. inside a rented house used as "bookingan" or drug and sex den in Block 9 area.
The fire reached Task Force Charlie at 5 a.m. which necessitated the response of 20 fire trucks from Metro Manila. Due to narrow streets and alleys, firefighters had to bore through high walls in the compound to reach the fire scene.
Loud explosions were heard after flammable liquids being sold in retail and stored in gallon containers began to ignite, causing the fire to spread quickly.
The fire was placed under control at 7 a.m.
